New Toyota vehicles feature the award-winning Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) package for ultimate safety. TSS includes a bundle of innovative safety features designed to protect drivers and passengers. This safety system includes the pre-collision system, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams.
The pre-collision system is designed to alert drivers if it detects a frontal collision with another vehicle. In some cases, it uses an automatic brake assist system for further prevention. This helps minimize the potential for crashing and reduces the severity in the case of a crash.
In addition, lane departure alert activates on vehicles going 32 mph or faster. It’s designed to help drivers stay in their lane and will alert them if they stray from clear road markings. Some Toyota models also feature steering assist to allow the vehicle to automatically make small corrective steering changes.
Finally, Toyota’s automatic high beams are designed to help drivers see more clearly at night without blinding other drivers. They activate when vehicles go above 25 mph and by using an in-vehicle camera to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the taillights of preceding vehicles, automatically toggle between high and low beams.

Toyota has begun researching heart-monitoring cars to prevent crashes. Heart attacks and medical emergencies while driving can be devastating and fatal, so Toyota is looking toward incorporating new technology to predict such events and bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
Digital Trends says, “Of course, with self-driving cars expected one day to rule the road, there would be no need for such technology. But with the widespread use of autonomous vehicles still a ways off, Toyota’s plans could prove an effective interim safety measure to prevent injuries (and potentially worse).”
Toyota’s team has been working with Kayvan Najarian, director of data science at the Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care, to develop this system. The system is thought to be algorithm-powered and able to monitor and predict cardiac events.
There are many challenges that the system developers still face; however, the work on this system is a step in a positive direction to help prevent injuries and fatalities from medical emergencies while driving. Learn more about it here.
Toyota recently revealed that the 2018 Toyota Camry will be the company’s first model to use a new generation infotainment system featuring the Automative Grade Linux (AGL) operating system to operate its in-car apps.
According to Forbes, “AGL is an open source project that is changing the way carmakers build software. Open source, simply put, is computer software with its source code made available to anyone to change or distribute for any purpose.” Open source platforms are currently used in mobile phones for faster development and application times.
The 2018 Toyota Camry is just the beginning, and there are plans for more Toyotas to include this operating system. The AGL system will upgrade infotainment systems and allow more technological developments to take place.
