The weather is warming up, and you can finally put away your ice scrapers and extra gloves. It’s the perfect time to do a little spring maintenance and get your car ready for the new season!
Here are a few car care tips we recommend:
- Check your owner’s manual and follow the recommended service schedules. It may be time to change the oil or check the battery and cables.
- Wash and wax. Winter brings extra dirt, grime and salt buildup, and a thorough wash after winter can do wonders.
- Check your tire pressure. As the weather warms up, tire pressure can increase. Make sure your tires meet the manufacturer specification.
- Inspect all lights and your wiper blades. Spring often brings more rainfall, so you’ll want to make sure both are in good working order.
- Check your car’s alignment and suspension. Winter can be harsh on vehicles, so a quick check is always a good idea.

The winter months are here, and we all know Kansas weather can be unpredictable. Be sure to stay on top of your vehicle’s maintenance and keep a few supplies handy to prepare for winter driving.
It’s always important to make sure that your vehicle’s maintenance is up-to-date. Small problems can lead to bigger problems, and the last thing you’d want is to be stranded in the cold, winter weather. Remember to check the following:
Battery — It’s more difficult for batteries to operate in cool weather, so be sure yours is working well. If you notice your engine is sluggish when starting, the check engine light is on, there’s corrosion around the cable connections, or the battery is at least three years old, you may need service.
Coolant — Coolant, or antifreeze, keeps your engine from freezing in cold temperatures, so it’s important to make sure it doesn’t get too low. Check your coolant reservoir and see that it reaches the “full” line. Also, be sure to check your owner’s manual to find out the proper coolant type for your vehicle.
Tires — Tire pressure can drop along with air temperature, so regularly check that yours are appropriately filled. Also, check your tire tread to make sure you’ll have good traction on cold pavement and snowy or icy roads.
In addition, keep a survival kit in case of an emergency. We recommend an ice scraper, extra gloves, blankets, flares, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, jumper cables, cell phone, cell phone charger, snacks and water.

Going back to college this month? Make sure your car is in tip-top shape with our back-to-school car maintenance tips!
First, take care of your basic car maintenance. Make sure that your tires have been rotated, your oil has been recently changed, check your fluid levels, and replace old windshield wipers.
In addition, every car has a recommended maintenance schedule. Be sure to check your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer recommendations. This maintenance typically requires checking or replacing parts like timing belts or spark plugs. If your vehicle is older, other major parts may be recommended for replacement in order to keep your car running safely and smoothly.
If your vehicle consistently has a warning light on, be sure to get that checked out. The last thing you’d want is for something bad to happen or for it to lead to a costly repair later down the line.
Finally, stay prepared! Make sure your car has basic safety needs, including a flashlight, jumper cables, an ice scraper, gloves, bottled water, or even a pre-packaged auto safety kit.
Maintaining your vehicle year-round is vital for prolonging the life of your car, truck or SUV as well as saving you money. Regular car maintenance can not only extend the life of your vehicle, but it can also lead to better gas mileage.
This summer, don’t forget to get your oil and oil filter changed. Different weather conditions can cause different demands on your engine oil and oil filter, so it’s always important to regularly check them. Another good thing to do this summer is to check your fluid levels. It’s important to consistently monitor your coolant, transmission fluid, and even your windshield fluid.
While tire pressure tends to drop during cooler weather, you should still monitor your tire pressure even during the summer. If you’re preparing for a summer road trip, the last thing you’d want is a flat tire!
Finally, get your brakes inspected and evaluate your alignment. If you notice your brakes making noises or needing extra pressure, it may be a sign that they need replaced. Alignment can be thrown off by general wear and tear, so stop in for a checkup! Proper alignment can improve your ride, save gas, and extend the life of your tires.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently released its TOP SAFETY PICK+ winners for 2017, and Toyota leads the way with nine models included on the list. IIHS gives 38 models the “plus” award and 44 models earn TOP SAFETY PICK. In order to qualify for TOP SAFETY PICK+, vehicles must earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and a good or acceptable headlight rating.
This year, IIHS toughened the criteria for new headlight evaluations, which the Toyota Prius v earned a good rating in. IIHS said, “The recognition program is meant to encourage manufacturers to offer state-of-the-art protection for people in crashes, along with features that help drivers avoid crashes in the first place.”
IIHS also emphasized auto brakes, which encouraged manufacturers to make design improvements. According to IIHS, “The 2017 Corolla qualifies for a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award with a good rating for occupant protection in a small overlap crash and a superior rating for front crash prevention.” Not only was the Corolla recognized for including a standard front crash prevention system with auto brake capabilities, but the Toyota Avalon, Prius, RAV4 and Yaris iA were also recognized.

The decision to lease or buy a new vehicle can be difficult to make. There are pros and cons to each, and it depends on personal preference and lifestyle.
If you are looking for low monthly payments and like to have a new vehicle every few years, then leasing may be for you. Leasing is when you pay for the depreciation of the vehicle over the lease term and not the full sticker price of the vehicle. Here are the pros and cons:
- Lease payments are typically lower than loan payments.
- You can return the vehicle at the end of the lease, pay any end-of-lease costs and move on to the next vehicle.
- The vehicle’s future value doesn’t affect you financially.
- If you want to end the lease early, early-termination fees can be almost as costly as finishing out the lease term.
- You have no equity in the vehicle.
- You are limited to the number of miles you drive on the vehicle. This can vary anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year.
- At lease-end, you may have to pay for anything that isn’t considered normal wear and tear.
If you plan on keeping your vehicle for years to come and like taking road trips, buying a new vehicle may be your best option. When you buy a new vehicle, a loan is financed through the car dealership for the price of the vehicle plus tax. You then have monthly payments, with interest, to pay the dealership’s financial institution. Loan term options can be anywhere from 36 to 72 months, and monthly payments are split up evenly amongst the length of the loan.
Once the loan term has ended and you owe no remaining payments, it belongs to you. You can keep the vehicle for as long as you want or sell or trade it whenever you desire. Here are the pros and cons:
- You own the vehicle and can keep it for however long you want.
- You can sell or trade in the vehicle at any time.
- You can put as many miles on the vehicle as you like.
- The vehicle can be modified or customized however you please.
- Loan payments are typically higher than lease payments.
- You are responsible for selling or trading the vehicle when you are ready.
- Over the course of a loan term, the vehicle will depreciate and will be worth less when it comes time to sell or trade.
